Before any special event, may it be a night out, wedding or trip to the beach, you can bet that I’ll have fake tanned several hours prior. What do I compulsively stock up on when it’s 40% off at Priceline? My fake tan. What was my main concern when on a recent European holiday? The darkness of my skin.

As vain as it may be coming across, I always feel my most confident with a ‘compromised’ sun kissed glow – aka, my fake tan, or when my skin is darker and tanned in general. It has intrinsically become part of my beauty regime before a special event and is an essential to feeling like my look is complete on a special occasion.

Who’s the fairest of them all?

A couple years back now, when I was in year 10 in high school, a once in a lifetime opportunity arose. My high school had teamed up with a program that connected students on school trips to volunteer work in under privileged provinces in Vietnam. It wasn’t just your typical person volunteers while staying in luxury accommodation out of town, it was a real experience. We were living in a village community. We were sleeping, eating, building houses and gaining life long memories that left a lot of us changed.

When building homes as a 15 year old student with other classmates, we were totally immersed in the culture and lifestyle. The families were around, and we got to watch their faces light up and hand over their home. It was an unimaginable feeling!

My understanding of the Autoethnographic Methodology

My understanding of autoethnographic methodology has been developed from Carolyn EllisTony E. Adams & Arthur P. Bochner’s journal article, Autoethnography: An Overview. Since reading this, I have formed my own understanding of the topic.

Autoethnographers study a culture’s relational practices, common values and beliefs (Ellis, C., Adams, T.E., and Bochner, A.P. 2011) which allows individuals to form more coherent understandings. The way that autoethnographers conduct their methodology is vast. They often do this by:

  • Conducting interviews which provide opportunities to examine members of such culture.
  • Developing and sharpening their participatory observations – engaging in the culture and collecting assortments of notes.
  • Analyse artifacts and items of cultural significance with conceptual frameworks.
  • Reference to own culture to juxtapose against another culture.

This approach challenges traditional forms of performing research, through its alternative method of collecting information through social stimuli.

Testing my patience

My slight knowledge of Japanese culture strings back to year eight and my Japanese elective (and of course my undeniable love for karaage). The only thing I’ve ever really taken and remembered from these old classes is ‘denwa bango wa’ – which when translated into English roughly means ‘what is your number?’. Clearly I paid attention to the essentials in class.

Despite my minimal memory of Japanese language and its three present alphabets, I am still eager to grasp the culture and emerge it amongst my own. The last Japanese film I have watched was Spirited Away which I found to be quite touching. Anddddd that’s as vast as my experience of watching Japanese films expands. Gorija really was something else.
