.... Coming in... This is Eloise Neto from the Galaxy of who knows where... I have been in contact with some of the most unusual outlaws of our time, a man called StarLord, an idiot who believes he can save the galaxy from something we all don't know of? Deadpool with his mountain of chimichangas however I wonder how he consumes them with no organs? Master Chef with his search to find Cortana an A.I.? Plus many more. My mission within this is to make it better in someway, funnier, smarter, calmer... who knows what. I just want to bring people together in fighting off diseases (Cancer) in our world while also making them want to play with zombies in virtual reality.


My first blog will be provided right here for you to understand the first part that focuses on Ellis reading of Autoethnography and the Grudge. The second part of my blog focuses on the movie Ju-On and the comparisons I have made between the movies while using Autoethnography.


The key points that I have found a number of connections and differences between both the films yet I felt that I needed to go into depth to understand the cultural background behind that of the spiritual culture of Japan. I can see that the history of Japanese and American culture have collided in these two movies such as that of the Rabbits Foot being symbolic of luck while not represented in Ju-On.

During this second part I went into more depth of information to grasp the knowledge more in the Asian areas of culture and how representation is seen. This is not all shown within this blog as I believe for me to understand more parts to the Ju- On story I would need to research further.

Key comparisons I made:

  • The location is still situated within Tokyo with the exact same actors for the ghost family that are Yuya Ozeki, (Toshio the little boy) Takako Fuji (Kayako the Grudge) and Takashi Matsuyama. (Takeo the husband who kills both of them)
  • The Director and Writer is also the same in both films known as Takashi Shimizu.
  • The film is split into six different segments that are separate people affected by the grudge in some way or form of connection. They are Rika, Katsuya, Hitomi, Toyama, Izumi, and Kayako. This is a big difference to the American version as it did not show any thing in turn making the audience have to think for themselves on what was happening.
  • There is a 2 year difference between the Grudge and Ju-On. This is a notable fact because the American version used a lot of special effects while in the Japanese version did not.
  • The same story was present in both movies about how the grudge had come about. The husband killing both his wife, son and cat over a fit of rage due to her loving another man.
  • The major difference (trying not to sound racist) is that every one of the actors in Ju-on are all either Asian or Chinese descendants which made the movie completely in subtitles making the movie and audio quiet hard to follow at times.
  • The Grudge is known as an Onryo. When anyone has contact with the house or the history of the incident would be effected by the Grudge and die. An Onryo refers to a ghost in traditional Japanese beliefs that is known to cause harm and mayhem to the individuals it faces or are connected to strongly by emotion while even known to cause natural disasters. Within the Grudge, she causes people to stay in a fit of shock with the inability to move or speak. A key point I want to add in is that the Americanised version had no belief in ghosts while the Japanese have a strong belief in them.
  • A lot more quick paced with little action but more dialogue. Example is in the beginning continues with the same line as the American. ‘The curse of someone that dies in a fit of rage…’sachie-chikako-isomura-and-rika-megumi-okina->Rika= Rika is meant to be the main character from the beginning of the film as she is a social worker that goes to see Sachie the elderly woman. Instead of her dying at the beginning of the first film it just goes on to show the grudge bit much sooner. Her boss is never seen in this movie. No love connection but instead her friend goes to the house which is connected to Toshio as a student in her class.


    -> Katsuya= The current owners of the house are known as the Tokunaga family that consists of Katsuya (business man), wife Kazumi and his elderly ill mother Sachie. Of course the representation of the American family from the American film is passed on through here and his sister Katsuya. A key difference I found besides the couple in turn dying either way was that Katsuya seemed to have been possessed by the husband’s spirit of rage in turn killing his own wife.

    ->Hitomi= Sister to brother Katsuya like that in the American version she dies in the same way however instead of having the representation of the rabbits foot placed in there it is just a phone piece that the grudge grabs.

    ->Toyama= A retired detective that was on the original case was found by the current two detectives Nakagawa and Igarashi. A spin off from the American when it targets the current detective that was on the case. Which connects to seeing his daughter in the house known as Izumi.


    ->Izumi= Izumi started off as a young girl but as years goes on is in her teens after her father’s death. But is slowly effected by the grudge over time with blocking mirrors and glass as she felt guilty for leaving her friends behind in the house. She has had photos taken of her at school which shows her face covered in black. She is seen being watched by her dead friend’s spirits.

Final Result: Due to my view of both movies I believe it would benefit me more if I was to look up more of the traditional beliefs on ghosts in Australian and Japanese cultures to get a better understand of what the Grudge truly is. Plus familiarising myself with common beliefs as well.

The experience of the Grudge/Ju-On Pt.1

My individual project came to me when my boyfriend asked if I wanted to see the ‘Grudge’ which is my most nightmare movie to ever watch. However I did not know that there was a Japanese version. The Japanese version back in 2002 was known as Ju-On and is actually the first and the American is classified as the remake. I found that depending on the order I would view the films as the American version has three sequels as well as the Japanese yet completely different stories which I may later follow through.

So I wanted to take on the two different views to compare the differences between them just by my experience of viewing them and then going further into researching key aspects to understand the film more. Like how we experienced within our first weeks of the semester with watching Godzilla, Akira and the documentary State of Play. I will be using Autoethnography to understand the side of horror in movies from the Asian area.

Easy definition: ‘Autoethnography is an approach to research and writing that seeks to describe and systematically analyse personal experience in order to understand cultural experience.’ – Ellis. (2011, pt.1)

By using Ellis reading to understand further an in-depth approach of Autoethngraphy requires one to first analyse the reading/source then go further to analyse its background/knowledge to better understand it.This is by using personal experience then comparing it to that of cultural.

In the simplest of terms: As a method, autoethnography combines characteristics of autobiography and ethnography. – Ellis. (2011, pt.2)

First part of my assignment I watched the Grudge, the American version.  I decided for this blog post I would not go in depth with specific information from the movie which is actors, dates, etc till after my second post that analyses Ju-On. I will not include the video footage I used during the process as I want to use it for my final project.

In Dot point form I found these key aspects that I wanted to further analyse after viewing The Grudge:


  • Key Quote: When someone dies in the grip of a powerful rage. A curse is born.
    • Religion/ Belief- (Sorrow/ Grief over a death)
  • Begins with a death of the man that is not fully explained during the start of the film
    • Continued on with another death of a woman that is not fully explained either

  • Rewind: The movie then centres on another American couple (Jennifer and Matthew) that is buying the house with their mother (above) and their sister. The elderly woman(Emma shown above) is present just before with the young American woman (Karen) before the grudge appears.
    • When viewing the house before buying the elderly woman begins to go crazy hearing sounds and staring at a black spot
  • The movie continues with the back lapse on the American family as the couple die and the elderly woman is left alone with the sister calling
  • Present day: Detectives become the main characters as the film becomes quiet quick paced showing lots of emotion yet little story in which the men find the dead bodies
    • The main detective finds Karen at the hospital and talks about the viewing of the young boy and that he had died 3 years ago
  • Rewind: Sister to American couple encounters the grudge sound and goes into the view of her taking the rabbits foot and then showing it was back to her
    • Rabbits Feet/technology when present with a ghost around to look further into which also can be found when the detective finds the tap tampered with by the grudge.
  • Present day: Goes back to the American couple showing a lot of emotion and love which would be interesting to see if it is in the Japanese version
  • Another death scene between care workers as his employee from the beginning that died (Asian Woman) had her jaw snapped off and haunting him
    • I believe for more suspense plus more death when all detectives die as they try to burn the house down but failed. The young American couple go in the house and the man becomes frightened by the grudge and paralysed. The woman tries to do the same as the detectives but fails as well and sees the grudge at the end haunting her.



  • It is found out that the original couple that lived in the house that created the grudge was a mother, father and son plus cat that all died from the father due to a jealous view of his wife and an American man that died at the beginning. Above shown.

Looking Back on State of Play

Relapse: State of Play is a documentary featured in Korea that looks into the E-sports genre of professional gaming but looks into the background of the lives of the gamers as well as the growth of the Star Craft area. State of Play is focused on three boy/men that are wanting to become professional gamers but are all at different stages of the ladder known as the beginners, watchers and pros. The documentary will go through their travels to show both the good and the bad sides to each boy/man story.

Back to the present. We were asked to analyse the documentary through Autoethnography from Ellis reading and former research that has been under taken to understand the other sides behind the documentary. My last blog looked into the sides of Health factors and women playing games.

‘When researchers do ethnography, they study a culture’s relational practices, common values and beliefs, and shared experiences for the purpose of helping insiders (cultural members) and outsiders (cultural strangers) better understand the culture.’- Ellis. (2011, pt.1)

Health Factors: Business Insiders evaluated the views between US Professional Gamers to Korea. Within Korea the sport is shown on Television, team sponsoring while gaining a celebrity presence. The fact that gaming houses were built confined the men into one area for long periods of a day or even for weeks to just simple train. This can be up to 25 hours a day with no sunlight or other fitness activities that can be strained on the men later on in life.

“If someone [in the US] plays 30 games a week — that’s just a random number — a Korean would play 70-80 games.” – Chae told Business Insider.

Women in Gaming: The clear thought behind this is by the value of a ‘man sport.’ In Korea men take a lot of pride and honour in what they do and with their gaming culture it thrives because of it. Evidence of a 17 year old Korean girl came to light about her becoming very good at the recent game known as Overwatch. She was accused of cheating but followed her career into professional gaming where she was abused and had to hide her face. She became so good that she made two professional gamer men quit due to the shame it would bring upon them.

Most of the women shown within the documentary are those who were the crowd and cheering on their favourite gamers. This can be another reason that leads to stress within the players causing further problems upon them besides just the game.

To finalize my findings, I believe the Korean culture is an interesting aspect of their life and how they treat things like the gaming culture there is very fascinating to look into. It is a very different perspective on life there.

State of Play- Gaming Life In Korea

When seeing the word, ‘Autoethnography’ within the first week of uni my first thought was, is that a spelling error? And that I am going to have to write this word over and over again dreaded me. After going over Ellis reading on Autoethnography simplified its term quite easy for me.

Within the subject we will be using the use of why and how to analyse, observe and interpret our take on different pieces we watch per week.

We watched both, ‘Gojira’ and ‘State of Play’ however I felt that I had more of a connection towards ‘State of Play’ due to my knowledge and connection towards Video Games. Even though I know the audience and background of how far games can grow communities I never knew it could go this far that it felt like I watched a sport movie rather than about a game.


‘State of Play,’ is a documentary featured in Korea that focuses on three people classified as, the pro, the noob and the watcher.  It looks into the culture and growth between the gaming industry of Starcraft and how it has evolved into a competitive gaming genre. Hundreds of young boys gather in hopes to become a pro gamer from various events that sponsor and gather recruits into specialised teams that train, live and breathe the game. Even though the documentary takes on a more professional look of the industry it also incorporates the use of emotions and the experiences the young men all endure.

The observations I made:

  • The fact that compared to the Noob and the Pro gamer towards the game as one enjoys the fact of playing the game and wanting to advance into the industry. The Pro gamer sees it as a fact of life and work merely not as a game anymore.
  • The Health factors that aren’t mentioned and valued as I begun to watch the boys seemed to not really have outside lives. Yet the main teams did have a system that made the noob have to work his way up the ranks to be accepted even if that means house work, training plus school.
  • The value of giving up everything to just train to get better. I found the comparison between each individual and how it was the game, schooling or life to be always a factor. It really connected to people’s lives and the decisions we faced as each individual wanted to take a different path and the consequences that came with it. Example, the noob wanted to go to School however the team said he would need to quit school to become better.
  • Women weren’t seen as the gamers but rather the fans that really had emotional connections towards the players that lead them to want to cheer them on. Even if this means through the wins and loss of games.
